The spread of electric vehicles into the LCV market has been boosted by a 100-van order from British Gas.

The order follows a six-month winter trial by the energy supplier, using Nissan’s all-electric e-NV200 van.

An immediate order for 50 vans, with a further 50 to be delivered by the end of the calendar year, has been announced on the opening day of the CV Show at the NEC in Birmingham.

It is part of a wider commitment by British Gas which plans to have 10 per cent of its fleet of 13,000 home service vans all-electric by 2017.

The six-month pilot saw Nissan and British Gas working with Hitachi Capital Commercial Vehicle Solutions to manage the fleet operations and Gateshead College to train drivers in how to drive the 100 per cent electric Nissan e-NV200.

The 28 e-NV200s in the pilot covered in excess of 60,000 miles between them, in what was the UK’s largest ever electric commercial vehicle evaluation to date. Performance in winter conditions was a prime focus, during typical daily usage by British Gas engineers, and according to those behind the trial it was such a success that some drivers were reluctant to hand back their vans.

According to British Gas Fleet manager Colin Marriott the e-NV200s proved extremely impressive. “The feedback from our engineers speaks for itself, with the majority saying they would be happy to keep the van permanently,” he says..

“Taking on 100 of these vehicles on a permanent basis demonstrates our continued commitment to leading the adoption of this technology amongst large vehicle fleets in the UK. With technology and infrastructure improving all the time, we look forward to expanding this number in the coming years.
