New technology developed in Bristol is being used to alert bus and lorry drivers to cyclists riding near them.

The Cycle Eye is fitted on the side of a bus or lorry and uses radar and camera sensors to identify when a cyclist is in the "blind spot".

It then sounds an alarm in the driver's cab. The device has been designed to ignore other objects such as bollards, railings or cars.

The device was involved in a trial by Transport for London.

Over three days of testing, including in rush-hour conditions, it had a 98.5% success rate in identifying cyclists.

It was created at the University of Bristol's innovation centre. Bristol is one of five universities focusing on enterprise and helping start-up tech companies gain access to funding through the Setsquared partnership.
