Essex Police are warning football fans they will be targeting 'morning after' drink-drivers during the World Cup.

This summer's drink-drive campaign coincides with the tournament and will see officers cracking down on drivers under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Officers will be stepping up road checks in towns across the county along with rural areas where some drivers believe they have less chance of getting caught.

Casualty Reduction Manager Adam Pipe said: "Sadly, some people consider themselves to be above the law and make the decision to get behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol, drugs or both.

"Not only does this put their life at risk but the lives of their passengers or other innocent road users.

"The morning after can be just as dangerous as the night before so if you have been drinking into the night, you will not be fit to drive in the morning.”

Last year, the summer campaign caught 94 drivers who were over the limit, which represents 3.5% of all drivers breathalysed during that period.

The campaign runs until the end of June, although Essex Police stress that drink driving is dealt with robustly 365 days a year.
