Islington will become Britain’s first borough to hit motorists with on-the-spot fines for breaking its 20mph speed limit.

Since November 2013, more than 900 motorists have been stopped in the London borough and warned for exceeding the 20mph speed limit.

However, from today, they could face a fine and three points on their licence if caught speeding on any of Islington’s roads, apart from the Transport for London-run ‘red routes’.

The limit has been in place for 12 months but was labelled ‘toothless’ by critics after not a single penalty was issued in that time.

Chief Superintendent Gerry Campbell underlined his commitment to making Islington London’s safest borough after eight people were killed and 317 seriously injured at Islington’s accident hotspots since 2011.

The Islington Borough Commander said: “I remain determined to reducing road collisions and targeting those intent on speeding through our borough causing danger to others.

“My officers and Islington Council staff have worked hard to advise motorists of the implications of driving at excessive speed in the 20 mph zones.”

Islington Council’s executive member for environment and transport, Councillor Claudia Webbe, added: “Islington has pioneered 20mph speed limits. In March 2013, we became the first council to introduce this limit on all council-managed roads in the borough.

“So we welcome the police’s enforcement of the 20mph limit in Islington as part of our joint efforts to make Islington’s roads safer for everyone. When we consulted on our plans to make Islington London’s first 20mph borough, residents and road safety groups gave us their backing so this is an important step forward.”
