This shocking CCTV footage shows the moment a dimwitted call centre worker towed her friend around a car park as he grabbed onto her bumper while sitting in a wheelchair.

The two pals have been slammed for "a piece of stupidity" after security cameras caught Maria Adams dragging a male pal around a Tesco car park in the middle of the night.

Call centre worker Adams, 20, was caught taking part in the crazy prank just after midnight at a Tesco in Roker, Sunderland, on January 10 this year.

The footage shows the man, who has not been identified, sitting in one of the store's wheelchairs and pushing himself up to the rear of the black Nissan.

Taken for a ride: Maria Adams dragged her friend around the car park while shoppers looked on

He then grabs hold of a towel attached to the bumper, before Adams puts her foot down and drives off.

Stunned shoppers watch as the duo repeat the stunt a number of times, racing past parked cars.

In some of the footage, which was played at Newcastle Crown Court, the man can be seen accidentally letting go, forcing Adams to slow down so he can grab hold again.

Prosecutor Neil Pallister said: "She was towing a wheelchair, with a male sitting in it, around the car park. The wheelchair was one of Tesco’s, for use by customers.

“There was a piece of towel attached to the car, held by the man in the wheelchair as he was pulled along. The incident went on for about three or four minutes.

“Security guards feared for the safety of customers who were still frequenting the store and feared for the safety of the man in the wheelchair.

“He did not require a wheelchair – you see him get out and walk away unaided.”

Banned: Foolish Adams was banned from driving for two years

Adams, of Whitburn, Sunderland, admitted dangerous driving and was sentenced to a community order for 12 months with a four-month night-time curfew, £1,369 costs and a two-year driving ban.

Graeme Cook, defending, said Adams had never been in trouble before and that she understands what she did was dangerous.

He added: “It was an act of stupidity really, that is what it boils down to.”

Speaking directly to the young woman, Judge Penny Moreland slammed her for putting other people at risk.

She said: "I have seen the CCTV footage of you driving a car in Tesco’s car park, towing around someone using a Tesco’s wheelchair.

“It is accurately categorised as a piece of stupidity. Risk was present to others using the car park.”
