What now for the redundant car tax disc holder? Here are 7 inventive uses you can try

PAPER tax discs became a thing of the past this year. So what can you do with your holder now?

HISTORY was made last week when the DVLA chose to scrap paper tax discs, allowing motorists to renew their tax online instead.

Tax discs have been a part of our lives for over 90 years, which means it's unlikely that anyone alive today ever drove without one (we hope).

Those little paper circles have held a place on our windscreens since January 1921, so whatever will we do now their plastic homes are laying empty on our vehicles?

Take a look at these ingenious ideas:

Tea caddy

Fancy a cuppa in your rest stop on a long journey? Now you've got a place to store it, and it fits perfectly!

Biscuit tin

What's a cuppa without a chocolate digestive to dunk in it?*

*Ginger nuts also fit acceptably.

Anti-theft device

Don't want pesky thieves to rob your beloved car? This chap should do the trick.

If you've got any particularly scary-looking relatives, a photo of them could work equally well.

Decorative display

Make your car look and smell great by using your empty holder to display pretty flowers. You'll probably have to keep replacing them, but it'll be worth it.

Apology announcer

You know those times when you park really badly, and you can guarantee people will judge your defenceless little car when they get back to their own, perfectly-parked vehicle?

Why not leave a note in your tax disc holder to acknowledge the fact that you're rubbish at parking. It might make fellow road-users less angry about the fact you're taking up so much space.

Portable pharmacy

Have you been stuck in a traffic jam for three hours, miles away from the nearest Boots with a throbbing headache?

Well, it's lucky that you've found this new use for that empty tax disc holder. Headache cured, problem solved.

Make-up bag

Driving to a hot date and think you'll need to freshen up your make-up? Your empty tax disc holder is the perfect place to keep your compact.
