The majority of motorists are keen to see the proposed drink-drive limit in Scotland brought to England and Wales, according to a survey by the Institute of Advanced Motorists.

Two-thirds of 2,632 respondents said they would like to see the drinking limit drop from 80mg to 50mg per 100ml of breath, even though 83 per cent admitted they drink alcohol.

47 per cent, meanwhile, agreed there would be a reduction in the number of alcohol-related road accidents if the legal limit was less forgiving.

The survey looked into how other methods of reducing the number of cases of drinking and driving. 53 per cent favoured using more police checks to combat drinking and driving. 5 per cent were against an increase in the price of alcohol.

Neil Greig, director of policy and research at the Institute of Advanced Motorists, said: "England and Wales are now totally out of step with drink-drive limits across the rest of Europe. Existing research has shown that between 63 and 116 lives can be saved every year by a lower limit.

"Different limits are also a recipe for confusion and the IAM would urge the Westminster government to review its approach as a matter of urgency."

The new legal limit will come into effect in Scotland on December 5th 2014 if approved by Scottish parliament. The Department for Transport said there were no plans to enforce the change in England and Wales.
