M62 'middle lane hogger' thanks anonymous member of the public for paying his £940 fine

Ian Stephens, from Wigan, says he has been made a 'scapegoat' after becoming first person in country to be convicted under new law

A van driver who became the first person in the UK to be convicted of ‘hogging’ the middle lane has thanked a member of the public for helping to pay his fine.

Ian Stephens, 42, was fined £940 after he was caught driving his Citroren Berlingo at 60mph in the central lane of the M62 between Rochdale and Huddersfield on August bank holiday 2014.

The painter and decorator, from Wigan, denies any wrong doing, claiming he was forced to drive in the centre because of rush hour traffic and high winds.

He was also given penalty points on his driving licence but is appealing against the decision made by magistrates in Leeds.

The father-of-two said he has since been inundated with calls from people sympathising with the situation, but felt like he was becoming a “scapegoat”.

He said there was also one anonymous member of the public offering to help pay the fine.

Mr Stephens, from Shevington, said: “It was a nice gesture, it was just a nice person.

“It is just ridiculous - all I was doing was driving in the middle lane.

“At the time in question all of the lanes were 50mph. You have got all of those cars backing up.”
